The book, “Sharh Kitab Al-Kaba’ir” is written by one of the great scholar, Imam Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhab and is explained by Shaykh Salih Al-Fawzan.
Many works have been authored on the subject of major sins (al-Kabā’ir), among the most prominent being the book currently in our hands, as well as Kitāb al-Kabā’ir by Imām al-Dhahabī. Ibn Ḥajar al-Haytamī expanded upon this topic in his book al-Zawājir ‘an Iqtirāf al-Kabā’ir.
Major sins vary in severity, with the gravest of them being disbelief in Allah (kufr) or associating partners with Him (shirk). Such sins are not forgiven except through sincere repentance before death approaches. Other major sins, though lesser than shirk, are still grave. According to the Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamā‘ah, these sins result in moral corruption (fisq) and diminish a person’s faith (imān), but they do not render a person a disbeliever. Rather, the one who commits them is judged as a sinner (fāsiq) or one with deficient faith, yet not an unbeliever.
This is why Allah (Most High) has prescribed specific legal punishments (ḥudūd) for some of these sins — such as theft, fornication, drinking alcohol, intentional murder, aggression, highway robbery, and others. The establishment of these punishments in this world is a clear indication that such sins do not amount to disbelief but are instead major transgressions for which legal penalties are due. These punishments serve either as deterrents (zawājir) or expiations (mukaffirāt). Hence, the punishment is enforced upon the perpetrator in this world, so they are not punished again for it in the Hereafter.
