  • Author: Shaykh Mansur bin Muhammad bin Abdullah Al-Saqoub
  • Language: Arabic

The book “Zad Al-Mustaqni’ in summarizing Al-Muqni is a concise text on Islamic jurisprudence, highly abbreviated according to the school of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal. The original work is “Al-Muqni'” by Al-Mawaffaq Ibn Qudamah, which was then condensed by Al-Hajawi into this well-known text called “Zad al-Mustaqni’ in summarizing al-Muqni’.”

The text itself is devoid of hadiths, as its purpose is to mention legal issues without delving extensively into branches, except as necessitated by practical need. It refrains from citing evidence or providing detailed explanations. This text is highly regarded among Hanbali scholars.

Some have said, “The texts of Zad and Bulugh… are sufficient in their richness,” referring to the books “Zad al-Mustaqni'” and “Bulugh al-Maram.” Sheikh Ali Al-Hindi commented in the introduction to his commentary on Zad, stating, “I have not seen a more organized and useful work in our school, combining concise summarization with beneficial content, like Zad al-Mustaqni’ in summarizing al-Muqni’.”

In general, it is said that whoever memorizes Zad al-Mustaqni’ with understanding becomes eligible for delivering legal judgments. The book includes issues where the author differs from the predominant view in the practiced school among the traditionalists like Sahib al-Insaf and those before him. In more than seventy instances, he deviates from the mainstream opinion held by later scholars. This information is documented in al-Iqna’ by the author himself, Ibn al-Najjar in al-Muntaha, and Al-Mardawi in al-Tanqih in thirty-two issues, which I mention here for reference.
